Sarasota Scullers Middle School Rowing

The perfect place to start!

Open to youth beginning in 6th grade (or younger, please ask our Headcoach for his evaluation, we do not want to discourage young athletes), the Sarasota Scullers Middle School Program provides a safe, supportive, and engaging introduction to the sport of rowing. Designed for athletes of all experience levels, the program focuses on teaching the fundamental skills necessary for long-term success both on and off the water.

Participants begin by learning the basics of the rowing stroke, including proper body positioning, boat control, balance, and efficient movement. Coaches emphasize sound technical development from the start, helping athletes build good habits that will serve as the foundation for future growth in the sport. Safety is a key component of every practice, and rowers receive instruction in water safety, safe on-water navigation, boating etiquette, equipment handling, and responsibility for club equipment.

A unique aspect of the Sarasota Scullers program is that middle school athletes are introduced to both sweep rowing and sculling. By learning both disciplines, participants develop a broader understanding of the sport, improve overall boat feel and coordination, and establish a strong technical base before moving into more advanced training. Exposure to multiple boat classes and rowing styles allows athletes to discover their strengths while building confidence and versatility on the water.

Beyond technical rowing skills, the program promotes important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, responsibility, perseverance, and goal setting. Athletes learn how individual effort contributes to team success and gain valuable experience working together in a positive and encouraging environment. Regular participation helps improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, coordination, and overall physical well-being while fostering healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

As rowers progress, they have opportunities to participate in local regattas, team events, and club activities, allowing them to experience the excitement of competition and the camaraderie of being part of a team. More importantly, they become members of a welcoming rowing community that encourages personal growth, leadership, and sportsmanship.

The Middle School Program serves as a pathway into Sarasota Scullers’ junior rowing program, where athletes can continue to develop their skills and pursue recreational, competitive, and high-performance rowing opportunities. Whether a participant’s goal is fitness, friendship, personal development, or competitive success, Sarasota Scullers provides a structured and supportive environment in which young athletes can thrive and reach their full potential.

* If a student-athlete from another FSRA program would like to join the Sarasota Scullers, they are more than welcome. Transfers must comply with current FSRA rules.
