Sarasota, Fla. – The Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program is thrilled to welcome Bernhard Stomporowski, a retired German rower, triple-world champion, and internationally renowned coach, as its new head coach.

Stomporowski, affectionately known as “Stompo” in the rowing community, was born in Braunschweig, West Germany. His rowing journey began in 1982, and he made his mark on the international stage at the 1987 World Rowing Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, earning a silver medal with the lightweight eight. Over the years, he competed in numerous World Rowing Championships and represented Germany in the Lightweight Coxless Four at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

With nearly 30 years of elite coaching experience, Stomporowski has trained dozens of World Championship athletes and prepared many for the Olympics and Olympic trials. His coaching career has spanned the globe, with impactful stints in Switzerland, China, the USA, Canada, and Brazil. Now, he brings his wealth of experience to the Sarasota Scullers, where his mission is to develop the “Whole Rower”—equipping athletes for success both on the water and in life. One of his key goals is to instill a lifelong love for rowing among his athletes.

“Teaching and coaching young athletes is about more than just fast rowing,” said Stomporowski. “It’s a process of helping them grow into great individuals. My father was a teacher, and while he didn’t just teach me, he involved me. That’s the approach I aim to bring to the Sarasota Scullers.”

Stomporowski begins his new role on Monday, December 19th, succeeding current coach Greg Wood. Reflecting on his tenure, Wood expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Sarasota Scullers and the community. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and confident that Stompo’s unparalleled experience will propel the Sarasota Scullers forward. His expertise is unmatched in this region, and I’m excited for him to continue the club’s mission,” Wood said.

Kevin Labrecque, Sarasota Scullers Board President, shared his enthusiasm for the new appointment. “Bernhard’s winning formula, which earned him multiple World Championship titles, will inspire and motivate our youth like never before,” Labrecque said. “We are thrilled to bring someone of his caliber to lead our program.”

Established in 1991, the Sarasota Scullers is the oldest organized youth rowing club in Sarasota. The club has a rich history of fostering athletic and competitive excellence among teens, with many alumni crediting their success to their time at Scullers.
